Summer Shape-Up: Simple things you can do now to look and feel your best!
Summer is just around the corner! Start getting in shape now by adding little “bursts” of activity to your normal workout routine. Take the stairs 2 at a time, sit up tall at your desk or stand to type emails when you can and walk everywhere. Add intervals to your cardio training and vary your workouts. If you love Pilates; but usually just take mat classes, try a Pilates class that incorporates cardio, weights or machines (Pilates Pro Works, Magic Circle workout, my Weight Loss Pilates DVD etc). If you are just a yogi, try some bootcamp style strength training classes (YogaTone, Brooklyn Bridge Workout DVD, your own outdoor circuit, etc.) they will improve your strength in chaturangas, arm balances and warrior poses. If you are a cardio junkie or run primarily, add some yoga, Pilates, or strength training to your regimen, even just 10 minutes a day makes a difference (I have 10 minute workouts on my new app, and a free 10 minute wrist and shoulder workout–great for runners since they often don’t train their upper bodies).
I think summer is a time to have fun, so make your workouts fun! Also create sports specific goals–shave a minute off your mile, go for a 20 mile bike ride, nail a handstand in yoga or perfect your teasers, and you’ll automatically see results in your body. Don’t beat yourself up about how you look, just focus on how you feel. No one really cares if you have a perfect swimsuit body they’d rather have you play some beach volleyball and enjoy the outdoor sunshine with them. Also, start drinking and eating more water! Watermelon, cucumbers, strawberries, apricots, asparagus are all fresh and in season now. Fruits and veggies with high water content fill you up and help flush out toxins. You’ll feel refreshed and at your best.
Most importantly, always love the skin you’re in. Wake up every morning and sit quietly for a few moments, watch your breath, connect with your inner self and deep well of potential energy. Remind yourself that everything you can possibly ever want, have or need is right here inside of you. Summer is a time to let go and share your inner beauty with others. We are all unique and beautiful as we are. Celebrate and honor your body and it will reflect on the outside too!
