Some of My Favorite Kids Books!
I love reading books to the boys! Every night we have our little ritual and sit on the couch together and read. Sometimes, Timothy will read the books to the twins. I can’t even tell you how cute it is. Reading is such an important skill for the boys to learn; and falling in love with books at a young age is the best!
Here are a few of our favorite summer kids books we are reading right now:
The Yoga House
The Yoga House shares lessons of kindness, peace, and gratitude for families; and brings mindfulness into your home. This super cute book also includes an affirmation, a nighttime meditation, and journaling exercises.
The Yoga House is all about encouraging you to dream big, shine bright, see the world’s magic, and be grateful for those that love you. The morals and values in the book because align with mine and of course with the teachings of yoga. I couldn’t pick a better book to teach the boys the importance of family, kindness and mindfulness.
Everybody Loves Grace
Everybody Loves Grace is about a dog named Grace who brings happiness and love to everyone she meets. Who doesn’t love a story about dogs?! The cute and fluffy main character is based on a true story of one dog’s ability to love unconditionally and maintain her courage through periods of uncertainty. At the age of four, Grace embarked on a journey from her home on a farm to the city life of Denver, Colorado. I talk to my sons about how I left Idaho for Manhattan when we read the book. Grace teaches us how simple acts of kindness could change lives and can have a profound effect on others; lessons I really want to instill in my children.
The Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel
This was Timothy’s favorite book and now it’s the twins! The Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel needs help finding his hidden acorns in this bright, colorful book based on the children’s game. (Which is also so fun) Winter is just around the corner, and the Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel has stored all of his acorns away; but he hid them so well that now he can’t remember where they are. This book helps with counting and color recognition. The twins favorite part about this book is getting to interact with the lift up the flaps.
I Am Peace
I Am Peace is one of my favorite books for the boys. The simple pictures are so cute; and the words are still so meaningful. Express emotions through direct speech. Find empathy through imagination. Connect with the earth. Wonder at the beauty of the natural world. Breathe, taste, smell, touch, and be present. This book teaches kids to be calm and experience everything that they are feeling in their lives. Through this book (and all of Susan Verde’s amazing books) I can teach my kids how easy it is to be happy and peaceful with the right attitude.
A Pound Of Kindness
I love this kids book just as much as the boys. This sweet book is the perfect night time read. A Pound of Kindness is all about a first-grader, Dave Clark. Dave is an active kid who loves playing with his crazy Dog, Duke. Dave lost the use of his legs to polio as a baby. He wears full-length braces on his legs and uses crutches to get around. So, when his teacher announces a “walking” field trip to the local fire station several blocks away, Dave is anxious. What if he has to take a break? What if he can’t keep up? Noticing Dave’s discomfort, one of his classmates, Ernie Pound, comes up with a plan to help—a Radio Flyer wagon. This book is filled with compassion, love, and laughter. This book is one of my faves because it teaches the boys how a little kindness can go a long way.
MarbleSparks Stories
I love MarbleSparks Stories. The books are extra engaging with the kids because they actually personalize their stories to incorporate the child’s name into it. The stories tell tales of superhero adventures, a day in the life of, or something nice the child took part in. These books make every kid feel as special as they really are and the personalized touch is an amazing added bonus to kids books in general. Timothy LOVED “Every hero needs a sidekick”, we read it every night up until the twins were born to help him feel comfortable with all of the new changes and having two new baby brothers.
Gus in the Big City
This is one of Robert’s favorites! It’s the story of a cautious little fly from Vermont named Gus who finds himself in New York City. He has an epic adventure and meets colorful, diverse characters who show him how to find his courage from within. I love this story about cultural diversity, friendship, family and overcoming fear and self-doubt in order to reach your goals.
All of these books are so fun while also teaching kids about kindness and mindful living. I love choosing books like this for the boys because while being fun and being able to look at the pictures its a great learning experience as well. What are some of your favorite kids books?
