Safe Catch Tuna
I grew up on tuna fish sandwiches as one of the staples my mom would make for my school lunches, and I still love them. It’s one of the those tasty and comforting easy meals that makes you feel like a kid again! When I became pregnant with Timothy, I had to stop eating tuna for the concern of mercury levels. Now that I’m nursing, I still have to be extra cautious of what goes into my body – even small traces of chemicals that may not seriously affect me, could have a bigger effect on Timothy’s little body. That’s why I was so excited when I came across Safe Catch Tuna.
I absolutely love Safe Catch Tuna, the company, and all they stand for.s This company is seriously amazing. It’s a start up and the people that work there are so friendly and helpful. More importantly, though, Safe Catch tests EVERY tuna individually for mercury levels (they’re the only company that does this!) and has no additives or fillers. Here’s some more information on how their tuna fish is made from the website, since they explain it best:
-
Our tuna is traceable from sea to table and we buy from captains whose catch methods minimize environmental impact.
-
Our mercury limits are super strict. Our limit for Safe Catch Elite Wild Tuna is ten times (10x) stricter than the FDA mercury limit
-
Safe Catch Elite Wild Tuna is the only tuna to meet Consumer Reports ‘Low Mercury’ criteria for kids and pregnant women
-
Our limit for Safe Catch Wild Albacore Tuna is three and a third times stricter than the FDA mercury limit
-
Safe Catch sets the strictest mercury limit of any Albacore tuna brand
I’m so happy I can now not only eat tuna fish again, but also feel good about it. It’s so nice to have something I can feel safe about eating all the time, especially as a nursing mom. It’s great for all moms, or women who are pregnant…or just everyone in general! Mercury isn’t good for anyone to ingest; and tuna is such a wonderful high protein snack that’s affordable and convenient.

The can design is nice too – I love the easy to open flip lid! It’s so much easier than the other cans where I have to spend time searching for a can opener and then hoping to not mess up half way through. If any of you are like me, you know the mess that makes 🙂
Needless to say, my tuna fish consumption has gone up since I discovered Safe Catch Tuna and I’ve found some good ways to get creative with it! There’s the standard tuna fish salad of course, which I like to use plain greek yogurt in place of mayo and it still tastes delicious and creamy. One of my favorite “recipes” I made was a tuna wrap:
It’s super easy to make – I started with a flax roll up (any wrap would work), start by adding in a generous portion on of tuna on one side, spread on some dijon mustard on the other half of the wrap, add a little spinach, tumeric and avocado – voila! It was really good.
These are some other fun and creative ways to eat tuna:
-
Cold pasta salad (or just add to whole wheat pasta!)
- Tuna Stuffed Avocado
What’s your favorite tuna recipe!?? If you try Safe Catch Tuna, let me know what you think!

How much is safe to eat when pregnant? And how often?
A few cans a week!
