International Yoga Day 2019
International Yoga Day
Today, Friday, June 21st, is International Yoga Day!
I have been practicing yoga for over two decades now; and I love to see how much it has grown in popularity! Today is a day where all the yogi’s around the world celebrate the art of yoga; and the happiness and health it gives us!
I feel like every day is a celebration of yoga in my life; but today I will really practice being mindful throughout the day and practice yoga off the mat. I also led a beginner yoga class this morning for Peloton and love introducing new students to the practice. This afternoon I’ll dive into my own practice and set aside time tonight for meditation and reflection.
Yoga originated over five thousand years ago, and it continues to grow as many people keep discovering the practice due to its popularity!
The word yoga means “yoke” or unite. The ultimate goal when practicing yoga is to achieve harmony between the heart and soul or mind and body. I think in this day and age when we can be pulled a million directions, yoga is just what the doctor ordered.
This United Nations General Assembly specifically chose June 21st, because it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. The date also shares a special significance in many parts of the world as well.
International Day of Yoga was first declared in 2015. Almost 40,000 people from 85 different nations performed 21 yoga postures for 35 minutes across the world.
So if you are an avid yogi or yogini; or want to celebrate this amazing practice, make sure you set aside some time today to hit the mat, what better day than today?!
Happy International Yoga Day!
