American Heart Month: Keeping Our Hearts Healthy
February is American Heart Month and I don’t just mean the chocolate hearts we get for Valentine’s Day! The month is dedicated to raising heart health awareness. We all know where our heart is because we put our hand over it every time we said the pledge of allegiance in grade school growing up, or while the American Anthem is being sang at baseball games. The heart is more than just a symbol for allegiance and love though, it’s the most important organ in our body. The heart pumps blood into our bodies and provides oxygen and nutrients. Exercising our hearts is just as important as exercising our minds and bodies. In the spirit of American Heart Month, I want to share the perfect workout for your heart!
Below is “the Four-Minute Cardio Workout for Your Heart,” developed by exercise physiologist and Bowflex Fitness Advisor Tom Holland. It focuses on exercises to strengthen the heart and help prevent cardiovascular disease – the nation’s no. 1 killer. This challenging workout is designed to get the heart pumping and requires no equipment – meaning you can do it from the comfort of their own home.
In addition, below are some great yoga heart openers for well-rounded heart health. Heart openers are great for physically opening up the chest and heart area, but also for opening up our hearts and our minds to the world and the love around us. As Dalai Lama XIV put it, “an open heart is an open mind.”
For full descriptions of how to do these heart opening poses, see my post here.
In the spirit of American Heart Health month, remember to keep your heart happy, healthy and open to the world around us!
