5 Ways To Treat Your Self on ME Day March 16th!

guitar class The other day I took a guitar lesson while Timothy was napping. My husband gave me a guitar for our anniversary in December; and I hadn’t spent much time on it. I come from a very musical family and Timothy loves music too, it’s such a great gift to share with everyone and to give to myself. We can’t fit a piano (which I played growing up) in our NYC apartment, so the guitar is the perfect instrument for me to learn to play. I’ve also read that learning to play a musical instrument as an adult can help strengthen and build neural pathways in the brain and bring us more joy. Playing the guitar for me is a whole new level of mediation.

As a new mom, it can be so hard to find time for myself and to not feel guilty about doing things for me. I am always torn between work, chores, wanting to spend time with Timothy and needing to take care of him. I realize, though, when I can do something each day for myself (even if it’s just 10 or 15 minutes) it makes a world of difference in my emotional well being and makes me a much better mom, wife, teacher, friend, etc.

On March 16th Domain.ME is planning a national “ME Day”or “a day to celebrate and share what makes each of us unique and to indulge, nourish and develop our personal passions and skills.”
“We all deserve at least one day to celebrate our achievements, embrace our one-of-a-kind personalities and connect to what is really important to us. The growing Domain.ME community is comprised of influencers, entrepreneurs and business owners who are sharing their personal brand with the world – that’s why this community is leading the effort to observe ME Day,”said Predrag Lesic, CEO of Domain.ME.

I love this concept and I think it’s important for us all to pause and do something nice for ourselves. When we treat our self with loving kindness and cultivate our skills and passions, we can be of better service for others. What are some of your favorite things to do for your self? Think back to when you were a child and how you liked to spend your time.

Here’s a list of ideas to get you started:

*For the MUSICAL: Pick up an instrument to play or take a lesson on an instrument, sit and listen to one of your favorite CDs from beginning to end, go to a concert, check out an orchestra, find some jazz music in your area, sing with your kids or loved ones.

*For the ARTISTIC: Take an art lesson, go to a museum, color with your kids on an easel or in their coloring books, paint, create clay sculptures, read up on a favorite artist.

*For the ATHLETE: Take a yoga class, hire a private trainer for a special treat, get your stats recorded, run outside, go for a bike ride, play chase with your kids, go see a game, hit the links or the tennis courts.

*For the NEW MOM: Get your nails and toes done, get a blow out, go shopping, meet up with a friend for a long, leisurely lunch, see a movie, get a massage, go for a walk, hire a cleaning person, go out for dinner, curl up with a good book, do some restorative yoga.

*For the TYPE A WORKER: Meditate, go for a hike, get some fresh air, reorganize a closet, clear your desk space, go bowling, play a game of chess or cards, go out dancing, take a cooking class, sleep in late!
