4th of July Special: Poses for Independence!
I can’t believe it’s ALREADY 4th of July weekend! Time flies so quickly these days. Independence Day is a good time to not just celebrate the independence of our wonderful country, but also to reflect on your own independence. Practicing yoga has many benefits both physically and emotionally. Yoga can bring peace and balance into your life and has personally helped me find my true independence within myself. Independence doesn’t have to mean you’re alone, or 100% self sufficient, but rather that you’re at peace with yourself, balanced and a feeling of being confident and strong.
Here are some of my favorite poses for regaining and finding Independence:
Dancer’s Pose: This pose creates strength, openness, and an elegance of form and action. Dancer’s pose cultivates powerful energy required to balance on one leg while in a deep backbend. The movement opens your heart out to the world. Dancer’s pose helps bring me confidence and gives me energy to do all things with passion – from training my clients, to playing with my son and sitting down for dinner with my husband.
Warrior 1–The name of this pose almost says it all. Warrior 1 is a beautiful backbend that allows us to breathe deeper in to our lungs and gain access to strength in our legs to support our upper body. Warrior I is about rising up out of your own limitations – “triumph of spirit.”
Camel – Also known as a “heart opening” yoga pose. Camel pose stimulates and balances both the heart and throat. Our heart and throat are normally closed off from slouching, and/or a protective reaction. For this reason, practicing Camel can sometimes stir up emotions in the practitioner more than other poses. This pose has helped me open up my heart and let love into my life. It has brought me closer to my husband.
Tree Pose – Lastly, Tree pose is all about being grounded (through the trunk of the tree) and finding balance. The tree also symbolized the breath of life running through us. As a working mother and wife, finding balance can sometimes be a challenge. I’ve found that balance for me means incorporating my family into my life and my yoga practice 🙂
