Guest Blog: Don’t Skip Savasana

I learn something every single time I step onto my yoga mat.  Sometimes it’s an incredible new lesson.  Sometimes it’s simply a gentle reminder.  But it never fails and I always step off the mat more inspired and connected than when I started.  I’ll be guest blogging each month to share my latest lesson from the mat with Kristin’s community.

Lesson from the mat: Don’t skip savasana

Hi, my name is Stephanie and I used to tiptoe over you to sneak out of class during savasana.

I admit it…I never really understood the whole “don’t skip savasana” thing.  I mean, wasn’t the workout over – why stick around to lay on the floor??  Absorb the benefits of the practice?  No thanks, I’ll absorb the benefits of getting to dinner a few minutes earlier.

My savasana-free zone reached far beyond my yoga mat.  My mind was constantly racing.  I’d be planning my next step while taking my current.  I was always working.  I was chronically distracted.  And I thought that success was measured by the speed at which I moved from task to task and place to place.

That all changed a few years ago when I finally reached my breaking point.  It happened suddenly.  One day I was moving at the speed of light, stressed to the max and the next I was completely stopped in my tracks.  I woke up one morning and felt like I was moving through quicksand.  The simple act of getting out of bed and showering was overwhelming and left me utterly exhausted.  My body pulled the emergency break (adrenal fatigue) and I was forced to finally embrace savasana.

During my adrenal fatigue recovery, I would roll out my mat, make it through one sun salutation, and then be so exhausted that I’d just lay in savasana until I had the energy to get up.  Some days that took 10 minutes and some days it took over an hour.  And I had no choice but to surrender to it.  Rest became my life.  I savored the quiet moments whether it was napping in the afternoon, reading a book and sipping tea, meditating, or simply sitting outside and observing life and my thoughts.

And I finally got the “don’t skip savasana” thing.

Savasana IS the practice.

The practice is the dedicated moments of integration, rest, and celebration.  It’s stopping to smell the flowers instead of rushing by and not even noticing that there were flowers to smell.  The practice is giving yourself permission to be present and pause.

And what a practice it is!  It isn’t easy for us to embrace the quiet moments of rest.  Life moves so quickly and, in our go,go,go mentality, we can miss so much of it.  But it’s the moments of rest that allow us to witness how amazing life truly is.  The times we spend focused on nothing but honoring our bodies and quieting our minds that connect us to ourselves.  The surrender that invites in faith.  The breathing that calms us from the inside out.

I am committed to bringing savasana off my mat and encourage you to join me.  

Surrender.  Breathe.  Simply allow yourself to be.
