5 Surprisingly Easy Healthy Eating Habits from Around the World

1332310_orig Many of us stick with comfort food and various types of unhealthy form because it is the ‘easy’ default option. However, eating healthy really isn’t that hard and doesn’t have to take that much time out of your day. Here are five surprisingly easy healthy eating habits from around the world.

Savor your food

Take a page out of the Parisian way to dine: eat what you love, but in smaller portions. While this might seem like common sense, many people miss that crucial second part of the concept. Before you know it, you’re on the couch eating an entire pint of ice cream and wondering what happened.

It turns out that your body actually knows what to do with your favorite high fat foods when they are consumed in smaller doses; a study showed that nutrients are processed better when you eat food you actually like. The French really savor their favorite foods and feel satisfied when they don’t deprive themselves. Just remember to keep your portions small and you too can eat whatever you want!

Add Rye Bread to your diet

You don’t often hear people raving about the dietary habits of Swedes. It’s a known fact that they don’t eat too many vegetables, but what they lack in fresh produce they make up for in other areas. Traditional Swedish diets include a lot of rye bread, whole wheat’s healthier big brother. Rye bread has tons of fiber, and a host of health benefits.

One specific benefit to incorporating rye bread into your diet is that it is very dense and helps keep you fuller longer. You’ll feel more satisfied after meals and won’t have as much of an urge to snack later in the day. Try using rye bread just like you would any other bread and see what kind of difference it makes for you.

Give tea a try

Don’t forget how important beverages are in your overall health. High calorie drinks are an obvious option to stay away from, but what better choices are out there? Popular in South Africa, rooibos tea packs a huge punch of flavor and sweetness while contributing to your wellbeing. Tea contains a lot of health benefits, but possibly one of the most important ones is the effect it has on weight loss. Antioxidants called catechins work together with your body when you’re exercising, and help encourage your body to rid itself of abdominal fat during strenuous activity.

Spice it up

One of the more popular health tips that can be worked into your meals is the use of spices from India. Not only do they add great flavor, but spices from this region harness amazing health benefits. Ginger, coriander, and turmeric are all credited with lowering cholesterol and reducing the risk of heart disease.

If you’re new to incorporating spice into your dishes, try something simple like curry. You can mix the powder into your favorite sauce, or even buy pre-bottled curry sauces that have just the right ingredients already put together for you.

Complement your meal with wine

Have you ever had an Italian meal that wasn’t perfectly complemented with a glass of wine? It’s common practice in Italy, almost required even, to drink a glass of wine with dinner. Health benefits of wine spread far and wide, but the main point to remember is that your overall cardiovascular health will be bolstered.
